Assignment
The theme of the assignment is the impact on Corporate and Information Governance of the EU GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) on the use and analytics of Big Data in Smart Cities.
You can find the UK ICO briefing document here https://ico.org.uk/media/for-organisations/documents/2013559/big-data-ai-ml-and-data-protection.pdf . We will cover the key aspects of this in the first couple of weeks of term.
Many businesses and researchers are wanting to use these techniques to improve the effectiveness of their businesses in cities.
This assignment will require you to evaluate the Governance and Compliance strategy that businesses and research organisations need to develop in order to comply with the GDPR.
What you need to do is to find a proposed use of IoT sourced data for Smart Cities from the thousands of use-cases that can be found on the internet to manage some aspect of our lives or business which will involve the use of Personal Identifying Information (PII, as defined by the GDPR). You are not being asked to create a new idea for this. There are quite enough ideas out there.
Once you have identified a specific use-case, then you should carry out the specified critical evaluation that leads to a proposed Governance and Compliance Strategy for managing the GDPR aspects for that use-case.
You should note that there is considerable debate about the ethics and governance of smart cities as is shown with the debates in Toronto, Canada about the proposed new development on the lake shore development proposal by Google’s sister company Sidewalk Labs, see https://www.citylab.com/solutions/2019/06/alphabet-sidewalk-labs-toronto-quayside-smart-city-google/592453/ to start your research on the Toronto proposals.
