Make sure that you use the substrate and reagents assigned to you on this Table. Failure to do so will result in an activity score of zero!

Post Experiment Questions:

1. Write the balanced chemical equation for your reaction using your installed MarvinSketch chemical structure application

2. Based on the chemical equation of your reaction, was the reaction a substitution or elimination?

3. Explain why of the two possible reaction that can occur under the reaction conditions, only substitution or elimination occurred

4. Predict whether your reaction occurred through a unimolecular or bimolecular mechanism and provide the chemical reason for your prediction

5. Could your reaction have occurred without heating? Check by re-running your reaction without heat. If the reaction does not complete in one hour, then heating would be required.

6. Why is it not necessary to use solvent in these virtual experiments with liquid compounds?

7. What is the purpose of collecting all possible spectroscopic data for products of synthesis experiments?

Report:

1. Prepare a title page containing name of student date and title of experiment, course and section number

2. On the next page, write a balanced chemical equation of your reaction giving both the structure and name of reagents and product

3. Continue, on the same page, under the subtitle “Procedure”, the description of the procedure you used, as given in the worksheet for that type of reaction but in your own words. Copying the worksheet as your procedure will receive a zero score for the procedure component of the report. Remember, procedure is written as an essay in past tense and reported speech with no personal pronouns. A listing organization of procedure will receive only 50% of the points for experiment procedure

4. Answer Questions 2 – 7 in the post lab list of questions. Your answers should be labeled in a similar manner as the questions and each answer should be separated from the next by at least one blank line.

5. Save your title page, procedure and answer to questions as one document. Upload this document on to BlackBoard as well as your saved lab notebook from the Beyond Labz virtual lab experiment containing your proton, C-13, IR and MS spectra of your product.

The due date for uploading your report items to BlackBoard is Monday, September 28 by 12:00 midnight. Start preparing your report as soon as possible so that if you have issues of submission, they can be resolved soon enough for you to still meet the submission deadline.
