Based on the readings/video(THEY ARE ATTACHED) and class discussion for Module 3.1 Colonialism and Gender, find an example from contemporary culture that demonstrates the “colonial gaze” on a gendered body/bodies. This can be drawn from an image, film representation, song, fine art, or speech (or any other artifact) that implicitly or explicitly frames a gendered and raced body as the Other to a dominant power (patriarchy, nationstate, heterosexuality, whiteness, Western/Eurocentric culture, etc.).
Be sure to point out not only how the artifact asks us to look at the Other, but also with respect to the Other’s gender. That is, how is the perception of gender affected by the perception of race?
You can also offer examples of resistance to the colonial gaze (examples in which people understand how they are perceived by the colonial gaze, and subvert or resist that perception through artistic or cultural means). Do not use the examples from the readings or class discussion (find different ones).
